How to Clean Diamond

Fine jewelry ranges in durability, but it is always suggested to maintain good cleaning habits in order to keep the ring in good shape. Do you know how to clean diamond? When you are cleaning your ring, avoid using harsh chemicals or anything that may damage the metal or stones.

Gentle cleaning can be done at home as often as once a week. Simply mix one part ammonia with six parts water, and let your ring soak for 5-10 seconds. Then use a gentle brush (a baby toothbrush is a great tool to use) to gently clean the ring. Make sure to get the grime out of the crevices, but be careful to not scratch the ring with abrasive movements. After cleaning, rinse the ring under hot water and gently dry it. You may use a jeweler’s polishing cloth as a follow up to restore the shine of the ring.

Be cautious: If you choose to clean your ring in the sink, make sure to have the drain closed! You do not want the ring to slip out of your fingers and go down the drain. An even better suggestion is to use a bowl to clean the ring, far away from the drain.

Have your ring examined every six months to check for loose prongs or any other damage. Most jewelers will also clean the ring after the inspection.

Also, you should always remove your vintage engagement ring before participating in sports activities, household chores, or other outdoor activities such as gardening and yard work. Wearing your ring during these activities could damage the ring.

Now that you know how to clean diamond and properly care for your ring, it is important that you store it in a safe place where it will not be damaged. When you remove your ring, have a safe place to store it. Keep it in the same place all the time so that you do not misplace it. If you set your vintage engagement ring on the counter or somewhere that it doesn’t belong, make sure to place it in a dish or somewhere safe so that it does not accidentally get brushed into the garbage or knocked down the sink. If you are storing your diamond engagement ring with other jewelry, place it in a small soft pouch so that the diamond does not harm the other jewelry pieces. Diamond are stronger than other gems, and they may scratch other items if you are not careful.
