Invisible Settings
Invisible settings hold multiple gemstones very close together, so close that the prongs holding them in place are not seen. The illusion of the invisible setting creates a solid surface of diamonds. Because of the lack of prongs or other metal blocking the light from hitting the diamonds, this can be a great way to showcase the gems.
The metal that holds the diamonds in place is located just below the girdle of the diamond. A small slit is created in the diamond, and the metal sits in the slit. With invisible settings, the metal is not seen when looking at the ring, because the edges of the girdle complete cover the small metal prongs located underneath.
One advantage to using invisible settings is that smaller stones can be places together to give the illusion of one larger stone. Using the smaller diamonds in this fashion will create the big gem look that she wants, but is much cheaper than purchasing a diamond with a higher carat weight.
One disadvantage to invisible settings is that they are very difficult to adjust for ring sizing or other alterations. Each ring must be uniquely designed for the stones that it will be holding, this technique requires such precision that it is nearly impossible to change it once it is completed. Also, the settings are more fragile than other types of engagement ring settings.
