Bezel Settings
Bezel settings holds the diamond in place with a precious metal frame that encircles the girdle of the stone– the circumference of the widest part of the diamond. Most bezel settings wrap all the way around, completely encompassing the diamond forming
a lip or a collar that surrounds the stone. Usually the bezel setting will sit just slightly higher than the stone.
You can also choose to have just a partial bezel setting, depending on the style of ring that you choose. A partial bezel setting will open up the ring to display the center stone more prominently and give it a more modern look. The partial bezel settings are sometimes called semi-bezel or half-bezel.
The bezel settings have many advantages, including:
- One of the biggest advantages to using bezel settings is that they protect the girdle of the diamond and help to prevent chipping.
- Secures the diamond well, so the stone is less likely to fall out.
- The bezel setting can be used to hide flaws or chips on the edge of a diamond.
- The ring surface is smooth.
- The metal of the setting can be molded to fit any type of diamond shape.
- The bezel settings often make the diamond appear larger.
- Because of the protective nature of this setting, it is perfect for a woman with a more active lifestyle.
One drawback to this type of setting is that a reasonable part of the diamond is covered– if you want to prominently display a high-quality diamond, then the bezel settings may not be the right choice. The other drawback to consider is that yellow gold may slightly alter the color of the diamond because the yellow tint can be seen through the reflection in the diamond.
Many people love the look of the bezel setting because it gives the ring a modern and bold style.
