Diamond Colors

The term diamond colors refers to the interior body color of the stone. Some diamond colors are more expensive because they are rare, but diamond color is more a matter of taste.

Diamonds with a slight bit of color or hue are less expensive than stones with less color. Colorless diamonds are quite a bit more expensive because they are very rare and they contain less chemical impurities. Many people cannot distinguish the difference between colorless and near colorless diamonds. These color differences can have a huge impact on price, so if a person wants a larger diamond but has a smaller budget, they should consider selecting a diamond with a lower color grade to save money.

Diamonds can be found in all colors imaginable, but the majority of the diamonds fall within the colorless to light yellow or brown shades. The GIA has constructed a diamond colors grading scale to rate diamonds, the diamonds are rated with a white background under a lamp that simulates daylight. The scale is as follows:

  • D- Colorless Diamond
  • E, F- Colorless to the human eye (without magnification)
  • G, H, I, J- Near colorless
  • K, L, M- Faint yellow
  • N through R- Very light yellow
  • S through Z- Light yellow

Diamonds that fall lower on the chart have a higher intensity of color. The diamond colors affect the price of the stone. Diamonds that receive a “D” rating will be more expensive than stones rated lower on the chart. Some diamonds are rated below the “z” level, which moves the diamond into a “fancy” color rating. Fancy diamonds have their own rating standards and contain colors that are very hard to find because they are extremely rare.

Diamonds with rare colors are hard to find, so they are extremely valuable, these are among the most expensive stones on earth. These rare colors include: pink, blue, yellow, red, green, orange, black, and white. Diamonds that are treated with color are not considered as valuable because the color is man-made.
