Many people like to take their new purchase to be appraised, but they are unsure of where to go or what needs to be done for antique jewelry appraisals. When locating an appraiser, you should look at these qualifications:

• What is their education? Be sure that the appraiser has taken training programs in jewelry appraisal.
• Does the appraiser have certification in Gemological training? An appraiser should have their Gemological certifications in addition to the regular appraisal courses.
• How long have they been doing appraisals? Finding an appraiser that has been in the business for a few years will ensure that they have the practice needed to correctly identify and appraise a piece of jewelry.

When you have your antique engagement ring appraised, be sure to obtain a written appraisal from the appraiser. Verbal appraisals do not have as much bearing as a written appraisal. Your appraisal should include:

• The name of the appraiser.
• The date the appraisal was completed.
• A full description of the item that was appraised– including gem details such as cut, color, weight, clarity, measurements and any other information pertaining to the ring.
• A photograph of the ring.
• The value of the item, with any explanation as needed
